George is his best friend and he would do anything to protect him. They are always together and Lennie always tries to listen to what George says, as he is the leader of the two. Their main goal together is to just own some land with a small house and not have to worry about things. This actually is a tedious task seeing as the economy is dead and jobs are rare, especially with Lennie, who tends to lose all the jobs they can find with his mindless actions.
Overall Lennie is a nice but... well not the brightest guy. He finds it hard to follow simple instructions and can not defend himself in situations. He is not independant and leaving him by himself can be dangerous. His lack of common sense and panic attacks is lethal, but George must stay with him because he understands that Lennie can not survive by himself and he also can't imagine being without Lennie, although he curses himself for putting up with the "crazy bastard".
Lennie and George
side by side.

I find it really sad when people call Lennie a nuisance because if he was really that bad then George would have left him alone. This shows how much George cared for Lennie. Also, if there had been more social understanding (and maybe medical understanding) of Lennie's condition, then all the consequences may not have happened. The mere fact George had to lie to the boss shows how unforgiving people were about the mentally disabled. One other thing: retarded and mentally handicapped are not really nice terms to use and are generally offensive. The correct term would be mentally disabled.
SO TRUE
Actually the correct term would be "wires crossed"
A better term for "mentally disabled", would be "limited mental abilities", because an individual is still ABLE of something using his or her mental abilities.
why does lennie have a mental illness???
No one knows exactly why people gain their disabilities. However, studies show that disabilities come from many sources such as parents with disabilities that run throughout the family and if the parents do harmful actions causing their bodies to malfunction.
